People-First Poetry – Local Artist Showcase at CAM Raleigh

April 14, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

$7.00

Poetry like you’ve never heard it before…

In collaboration with CAM Raleigh:

The inaugural show of this series, People-First Poetry will be a monthly showcase of talented local artists. Our goal is to create an intimate and powerful environment where the focus is on the artists and creating an open dialogue with their audience.

Laugh, cry, and yell as these 3 performances bring you into a world of heartfelt words, beautiful refrains, cutting rhymes and ultimately change your expectations around what poetry can be.

This show’s artists will be…

ImonyLowd – Raleigh born and bred, Imani Horton, or ImonyLowd, is an inspiration. She has a gift for wordplay and depth and her poetry is inter-twined with her passion for music; and boy can she sing some music. Her artistry has granted her access to poetic giants like traveling group Poets in Autumn and she’s graced stages including The Legacy Chicago and Atlanta.

Johnny Lee Chapman III – Johnny Lee Chapman III, from Fuquay-Varina, NC, is a storyteller, performer, and public artist. He has performed locally and nationally as a professional poet, is now involved with art projects along New Bern Avenue and the Gipson Play Plaza at Dorothea Dix, and has self-published two fiction novels.

FlowEssence – Shaun Harris, known on stage as FlowEssence, is a poet/writer from Raleigh, NC. Well known locally for performing Hip Hop and Spoken Word at live events across the triangle, as well as publishing his first novel titled “Senseless Time,” his accolades include: publication in the book “Black Lives Have Always Mattered,” 5 Week Freestyle Friday champion on K97.5, and a feature in the critically acclaimed film “Black Kings.”

This experience will be hosted by CAM Raleigh, a non-collecting contemporary art museum that provides an environment for transformation through educational programs, cultural experiences, and bold, non-traditional exhibitions by living artists. In sponsoring experiences like this, CAM is working to transform the artistic landscape of Raleigh by investing in more platforms for local artists with a powerful message.

***Artist performances may involve mature themes***
